OUR CURRENT PROJECTS

WEYA

The Beijing Studio Center is a founding partner for the World Event of Young Artists. This program will host 1000 young artists ages 18-30 from around the world and work in tandem with the 2012 London Olympic Games to promote the Cultural Olympics. We will be sending a group of young artists to represent China and it's blossoming art scene.

Future History

Former 2010 artist in residence Scott Groeniger created Take Notice of Safe [recycled organism] during his residency with us. He then turned these prints into sustainable shopping bags which are now being spread to people to take with them to the farmers market and shopping locations.

Our residency program is an international program and is ideally suited to emerging and mid-career visual artists and designers who seek an intensely focused period of time with their ongoing art projects. Artists will engage and interact with their Chinese counterparts to exchange ideas, critical feedback, and become immersed in a new and inspiring culture. BSC also welcomes art professionals and researchers who are interested in the Chinese contemporary culture scene and would like to be involved.
Each BSC Resident Artists Receives:2-12 week residency for focused independent workPrivate studios connected with a kitchen, bathroom, and bedroomBilingual assistance to artists carrying out projects requiring the technology and expertise of local artistsParticipation in local social events, festivals, exhibitions, performances, and invitational dinnersTour of local master studios, museums and local marketsOpen Studio events are scheduled once a month as an additional opportunity to share workOpportunities to join organized group exhibitions in partner venuesProgram FeesThe program fee for a 2 week residency is 800USD; a 4 week residency is $1500USD; a 8 week residency is 2800USD and a 12 week residency is 3900USD. There is a 20% non-refundable deposit. Depending on circumstances, this balance could be refunded by writing a letter of explanation. This will be considered on a case by case basis. BSC offers two four-week summer residencies as part of the International Summer School Program. International artists, college students, professors and art professionals have the opportunity to live and travle in China, and enjoy traditional and contemporary Chinese culture, communicate with peers, attend workshops, join lectures, go to see exhibitions, etc. We hope to inspire new ideas in current and future bodies of work.
AccommodationParticipants will live in comfortable, double occupancy hotels during the whole program. Meals Breakfast will be provided in all hotels. When groups are traveling, some of the meals and bottled water for drinking will be privided. Eating expresses Chinese ancient civilization as well as modern culture, both have an interesting form. The content is rich, and from outside to inside is both shallow and deep. The artists of this exhibition by using the subject of eating to make performance art are embarking on a journey in search of the pinnacle of Chinese culture. I believe that Chinese artists performing in the Eat show express human world values. I believe they hit the nail on the head. It enlightens and shocks the mind with activity to a depth. The cerebrum is left to ponder the immortal culture inherited. "Eating" was a one day contemporary art group performance. Twenty one artists created food based, interactive pieces of work based on the act and society of eating.
It is a common thing that you and me, we must do, naturally do.If I talk about it, it's not interesting.We use eating to communicate. Artists have no longsight, to us, all things are art. Realizing that many things are related to eating. We get up to art mischief.We just use eating to communicate.Chinese contemporary art burst out onto the scene with exceedingly commonplace icons waving the flag of inovation and revolution. Why----! Look at this, performers even want to take off more after they expose their reproduction organ ---- How short tempered ---! I've known the Frans Masereel Centrum for years and have always wanted to go and stay in this artists' paradise. The center is a printmaking workshop with 9 full furnished cottages. As a residency program, it allows artists, printmakers or not, to explore silkscreen, lithography, eching, letterpress and mixed media processes for a maxmuim of 3 weeks. In February 2011, China Arts Link orgnized a group of 5 Chinese artists to participate in FransMasereel Centrums residency program. I went as the orgnizer, translator and artists family member. I had an absolutely wonderful time. As the director of many years for the Beijing Studio Center, a residency program in Beijing, China, I know how important a good residency means to artists. Though the art world seems to be shrinking due to more exhibitions, I still believe residency programs open a door for artists to be in another culture, experience a calm and normal local lifestyle, make friends with locals, and exchange ideas and communicate with peers. While learning new techniques, Frans Masereel Centrum lets Wim Legrand and Ivan Durt assist resident artists with the technical side of printmaking.The center sits in a perfect location nestled in a suburb of Ksterlee, 1 hour by train to Anterwipe, the second largest city in Belgim. It has a long history of printmaking. When you work at the center, it is quiet. You can look upon eld of horses eating grass just outside the window. You can really focus on your work. On the weekends, museums in Anterwipe are waiting for you, as are many local shops. The thing I love most is when all the artists gather on Monday mornings and exchange ideas. We got to know many Belgian and international artists and their works. I love the multi-media collaboration project the center organizes every other year. Visual artists, writers, and sound artists are selected by an invited curator and become collaborating resident artists and have a show at the end. Many Chinese artists have never heard about this, and felt so excited. I love to see how happy they are while learning, while making friends, and tasting chocolates and beer.Guo XinxinFounder and Director of BSC

For over a thousand years the Olympic Games has brought a global message of peace and the next 2012 London Games will continue this tradition. This is a fantastic opportunity for a cultural, young event that brings and values the Olympic message to the younger generation, giving the opportunity to young artists coming from the entire world to share their creations.The World Event Young Artists (WEYA) will be the first global event to present in one place the creations of young people from across five continents.Young people from 18 to 30 years old are crucial for the future, they are looking at the world and they will be the actors of change. Commonly associated words of the third millennium are crisis, economy, globalization: sadly it seems that the new era is a collection of negative concepts. We want to propose positive key words for the future, so what's better than starting with young people?Young creators are involved in arts, they build every day thousands of real and digital connections, they canand do undertake real exchange - an intercultural, trans-cultural dialogue through the language of the arts. Creative dialogue, creative economy, creative generation: these words are inextricably linked for our young people, and WEYA provides them with an opportunity to meet, build bridges and connections, and demonstrate to the planet the power of creativity.Over this 10 day event hundreds of connections, opportunities, meetings, cultural and, socialexchanges will take place, building strong networks between people, organizations, urban and regional communities. There will be residencies, seminars and workshops, to exchange ideas and practice and produce site specific work for the event. Young Artists will be housed in university accommodation and have the opportunity to eat together every day as part of the exchange.

Future History

Scott Groeniger createdTake Notice of Safe [recycled organism] at the BSC in the summer of 2010 as a part of his larger Future History series. He collaged together vectored photographs of current construction sites to create billboard sized prints. "I am questioning the motivation and context for unfettered expansion and consumption by exploring the current landscape of China's rapid industrial evolution at a time when oil and other important natural resources are beginning to become scarce. I am also concerned that if humans do not approach evolution and modernization in a more sustainable and environmentally sensitive manner, we will all be in danger of causing irreversable environmental damage on a shared planet which is both fragile and finite."Scott showed these works in a solo show at the BSC Gallery. Following the show, he hired the BSC's cook to turn his works of art into shopping bags to continue their sustainable life. These bags are now to be given to people to use in their day to day shopping lives, eliminating excess plastic bag waste.

We are an ever expanding arts network in China. We can help our partners realize projects within China or to bring Chinese artists to their own programs. We inform Chinese artists about our partner programs and suggest these artists to apply for partner programs which best suit them.We help international project become planted in China's ever growing art scene and will spread the word about international events and programs throughout China.
